Transfer to Borovets from Sofia Airport: time, route and how to book
Transfer from Sofia Airport to Borovets: around 70 km and 1 h to 1 h 30 min on the road, a fixed price per car, room for skis and luggage, meet and greet at the terminal.
Borovets is the closest large ski resort to Sofia Airport. The distance is about 70 kilometres and the drive takes roughly one hour to an hour and a half, depending on traffic leaving Sofia and on road conditions in winter. That makes it the resort you reach fastest after landing — in good conditions you are at your hotel reception before your suitcase has cooled down.
Below is the practical part: how long the drive really takes, which route is used, how much luggage and how many pairs of skis each car class holds, and what the fixed transfer price includes.
How long the drive from the airport to Borovets takes
Plan for between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes by car. The actual time depends on three things:
- Landing time. Between 7:30 and 9:30 and between 16:30 and 19:00, getting out of Sofia is slower.
- Season and weather. During snowfall or ice on the pass towards Samokov, speeds drop considerably.
- Weekends in peak season. Saturday mornings load the Samokov – Borovets stretch, because day skiers from Sofia are heading to the resort too.
At night and off peak the drive is often under an hour, but do not count on that when planning connections.
Which route is used
There are two sensible options, and the driver chooses according to traffic and conditions on the day of travel.
Via Simeonovo and the pass towards Samokov
The shorter route — from the airport along the Ring Road, past Simeonovo and Bistritsa, over the pass towards Samokov and then the last kilometres to Borovets. The distance is the shortest, but the road is mountainous, two lanes wide, and in winter traffic sometimes moves slowly.
Via the Trakia motorway and Kostenets or Ihtiman
Longer in kilometres, but often faster and more predictable: along the motorway to the Ihtiman or Kostenets exit and then on towards Dolna Banya and Borovets. In bad weather or heavy snow on the pass, this option is usually the more sensible one.
In both cases the price you agreed does not change because of the route chosen — it is fixed in advance.
What the fixed price includes
The price is agreed before the journey and applies to the car, not per passenger. There is no meter and the amount does not grow because of a traffic jam or a detour. It covers:
- meet and greet in the arrivals hall at Sofia Airport;
- help with luggage to the car;
- the whole drive to your address in Borovets — hotel, apartment or chalet;
- motorway tolls and airport parking;
- free waiting time after landing.
You pay one number, the one you saw when booking. For a group of four, that is usually more predictable than four separate tickets plus a taxi from Samokov.
Luggage, skis and snowboards: which car you need
A winter transfer is a question of volume, not of seat count. A 160–180 cm ski bag and a suitcase for a week take up serious space, and board bags are bulky.
- Mercedes EQE — for two people with normal luggage. Suitable if you are renting skis on site in Borovets and travelling with suitcases.
- Mercedes EQS — the same format, but with more room and higher comfort for a long drive or a late arrival.
- Mercedes EQV — the option for families and groups with their own equipment. Skis, boards, child seats and suitcases all fit without being stacked on your knees.
These three classes are bookable online. On request, an S-Class, Maybach, V-Class, G-Class or Rolls-Royce can also be arranged — for longer transfers, events and special occasions. If you are a group of more than six, or travelling with an unusual amount of equipment, the cleanest solution is two cars, or an EQV plus a second vehicle.
Child and booster seats should be requested in advance, at the time of booking, so they are available on the day of travel.
Meet and greet at Sofia Airport
Most international flights land at Terminal 2. The driver waits in the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name, helps with the trolley and takes you straight to the car. There is no counter to find and no queue for taxis outside, which in January at minus five degrees has tangible value.
Flights are monitored, so a delayed plane does not mean you have lost your transfer. If you are landing at Terminal 1, state that when booking — the two terminals are a few kilometres apart.
Winter conditions on the road
Between Samokov and Borovets the road climbs, and during active snowfall it is cleared with some delay. A few practical notes:
- Cars run on winter tyres during the cold season, as the law requires.
- In difficult conditions the driver goes more slowly — that is the nature of a mountain road, not a lack of organisation.
- If you have a connection back to the airport on your departure day, allow a buffer of at least an hour on top of the pure driving time.
- Some chalets and apartments above Borovets are on steep, narrow streets. Give the exact address so the nearest accessible drop-off point can be planned.
Back to the airport and other directions
The return transfer Borovets – Sofia Airport is booked in the same way, and it is worth arranging it on arrival, while you still remember your flight time. For morning flights between 6:00 and 9:00, pickup from Borovets is usually between 3:00 and 5:30 — unpleasantly early, but safer than options involving a connection through Samokov.
From Borovets people often travel on to Bansko, Pamporovo, Plovdiv or Greece. Online booking is with pickup in Sofia; everything else is arranged on request, with a quote and a fixed price.
How to book
- Choose the date, landing time and number of passengers.
- Pick the car class according to luggage and skis, not only according to the number of seats.
- Add your flight number, the exact address in Borovets and a child seat request if you need one.
- You receive a confirmation with a fixed price for the car.
A booking must be made at least 3 hours before pickup. Changes and cancellation are free up to 12 hours before the scheduled time — enough if your holiday plan changes or you move your flight a day earlier.
If you are unsure between two car classes, describe your luggage in the request and you will get a specific recommendation before you pay.
