Airport Transfers in Sofia: Departures, Early Starts and Connections

Most writing about airport transfers is about arriving. Departures are the half that goes wrong more often, because an arrival that goes badly costs you an hour and a departure that goes badly costs you the flight.

This covers the outbound side at Sofia Airport: what time the car should actually come, how early is too early, what to do about a very early flight, and how transfers work when the airport is the middle of the journey rather than the end.

Working out the pickup time

Do it in three steps, in this order, and write down the answer rather than holding it in your head.

1. Fix the time you want to be inside the terminal. Follow your airline's guidance for the flight you are on; long-haul and peak departure banks need more than a quiet midday short-haul.
2. Add the drive. From central Sofia the airport is 11 km and about 20 minutes in ordinary conditions. In weekday morning traffic, treat it as longer.
3. Add a margin you would be comfortable losing. Not a margin that makes the plan work — one you could give away entirely and still be fine.

The pickup time is the result of that subtraction. It is almost always earlier than instinct suggests, and the cost of being early at an airport is a coffee.

Very early departures

Sofia has a meaningful bank of early-morning departures, which means a lot of 04:00 and 05:00 pickups. Three things worth knowing.

Availability at that hour is precisely where taxis and rideshare are least dependable, and where a pre-booked car is worth the most. There is no night surcharge on our fares — a 04:30 pickup into the airport is the same EUR 66 as a 14:30 one.

Book it the day before at the latest. The minimum notice is three hours, but three hours before a 04:30 pickup is 01:30, and that is not a decision anybody should be making at 01:30.

And give the chauffeur a phone number that will be switched on. At that hour, a doorbell is not a plan.

Departures from outside Sofia

If you are staying in the mountains or on the coast and flying out of Sofia, the journey back is the one to plan properly. The drive times are the same in both directions but the consequences are not: arriving in Bansko an hour late is an inconvenience, while leaving Bansko an hour late can be a missed flight.

• Borovets to Sofia Airport — 68 km, about 1 h 10.
• Bansko to Sofia Airport — 160 km, about 2 h 05.
• Plovdiv to Sofia Airport — 146 km, about 1 h 35.

In winter, add to all three. The mountain sections are the part that varies, and they are at the start of the journey when there is no time made up yet.

Connections, and the airport as a middle

Sofia is a connecting point for a good deal of Bulgarian travel: fly in, transfer straight out to a resort, and reverse it a week later. Two patterns come up constantly.

Land and go. Book the transfer to the final destination rather than into Sofia and out again the next morning. The direct fare is lower than two legs, and it removes an overnight with luggage. Sofia Airport to Bansko is EUR 250 and about two hours; Sofia Airport to Borovets is EUR 142 and about an hour and ten.

A long layover. If you have six hours between flights, hourly hire is the arrangement rather than two transfers — the car takes you into the city, waits, and brings you back, from EUR 55 an hour. Sofia's centre is close enough that a half-day is genuinely usable.

What the fare covers on an outbound trip

The same as an inbound one: VAT, tolls and fees, bottled water, and a fixed price that does not move with the traffic. The waiting allowance differs — a departure pickup carries the standard 15 minutes rather than the 60 that applies to airport arrivals, because there is no flight to track on the way out.

Cancellation is free up to one hour before pickup. Payment is by card at booking, as a guest, with the confirmation emailed straight away.

Skis, boards and the outbound problem

Ski equipment is easier to arrange on the way in than on the way out, because on the way in you know exactly what you are carrying. On the way out there is often more: bought equipment, extra bags, a group that arrived separately and is leaving together.

Skis and boards travel in an EQV, which takes five passengers and five large pieces. They do not travel in an EQE. This is a booking decision, not a kerbside one — say what you are carrying when you book and the right car is assigned rather than turned away.

The same applies to children. Say the age when you book and the seat is fitted before the car arrives.

If something goes wrong on the morning

Call the chauffeur first. The number is in the confirmation email, and at 04:00 a direct call is faster than any other route. If you are running late, say how late — the pickup carries 15 minutes of free waiting, and beyond that the useful thing is information rather than a rule, because the chauffeur can often absorb a delay you cannot see from indoors.

If your flight is cancelled before you leave, cancel the booking. It is free up to one hour before pickup, and telling us early means the car is genuinely released rather than sent.

Both directions, same day

For a short trip — in on Tuesday, out on Thursday — book both legs at the same time. It is not cheaper, but it removes the failure mode where the outbound is remembered at 23:00 the night before and the good options have gone.

Common questions

How early should the car collect me?

Work backwards from your airline's advice for the flight, add 20 minutes from central Sofia in normal conditions and more in morning traffic, then add a margin you could afford to lose entirely.

Is there a surcharge for a night or early-morning pickup?

No. The fare is the same at 04:00 as at 16:00, and the same at weekends.

What if I am running late coming down?

The pickup carries 15 minutes of free waiting. Beyond that, call the chauffeur — the number is in your confirmation — because the useful thing at that point is information, not a rule.

Can you take me to Plovdiv Airport, Burgas or Varna instead?

Yes. Those are ordinary transfers with their own published prices, and each has its own route page.

Do you handle a group leaving at the same time?

Yes — several cars departing together is a normal booking. Say the total number of people and bags and we will tell you the right combination rather than have you guess.
